When snow blankets the landscape and silence settles all around, a very special time of year begins at the Moarhof in Meltina. No traffic, no mass tourism – just snow-covered forests, crisp mountain air and that wonderful feeling of finally being able to breathe deeply again. A winter holiday on a farm isn’t a compromise here. It’s a reason to come. Especially for those looking for genuine peace and quiet – together with the warm, one-of-a-kind hospitality that makes Moarhof what it is. Wondering what awaits you? Here it is.
One of the best things about winter walking at Moarhof? You can set off straight from the farm. No complicated journeys, no unnecessary detours. Just lace up your boots and head out into the landscape around Schlaneid. There are winter walks for everyone – from a gentle stroll overlooking the Adige Valley to a longer hike through the peaceful forest. And if you’d like to venture a little further, we’re happy to lend you snowshoes. Somehow, every crunch underfoot sounds a little like a holiday. Prefer gliding to crunching? Then it’s time for some cross-country skiing!
Picture this: dawn is slowly breaking outside, fresh snow covers the ground and inside, the scent of hot coffee or tea fills the room… lovely, isn’t it? Winter has its own rhythm – and so does breakfast at Moarhof. No rushing, no crowds. Just you, a generously laid table filled with products from our farm, Walli’s homemade jams and a view across the Adige Valley as it slowly wakes up. Along with the quiet certainty that today belongs exactly where it should: to you.
After a day out in the winter air, there’s just one thing you need: our farm sauna. And afterwards? Nothing but peace and quiet. In the cosy tea corner, herbal teas from South Tyrol’s Kräuterrebellen are waiting to be enjoyed. Warm up slowly, take a deep breath and simply let the evening unfold. Nothing more is needed – and that’s exactly the point.
… and off you go! Just behind our barn, a small slope is waiting for anyone who doesn’t just want to admire winter, but really wants to enjoy it to the full. When there’s enough snow, of course. Sledge until your cheeks are glowing – and we’ll happily lend you the sledges. If you’d rather take things at a gentler pace, walking poles and snowshoes are also available. And for cross-country skiers: when there’s enough snow, you can head to the trail on the Salten; otherwise, Meran 2000 is not far away.
A hot punch in your hands, lights glowing overhead and the scent of cinnamon and fir in the air – that’s Christmas magic. And there’s plenty of it to discover near Moarhof. The Christmas markets in Bolzano and Merano are easy to reach, but our real insider tips are the Rittner Christbahnl, the charming Christmas railway on the Ritten, the Alpine Advent in the Sarentino Valley, the atmospheric Christmas market in Klausen and the Sterntaler Christmas Market in Lana. Best of all, with the Mobilcard you can get there easily by bus and train – free of charge, with no parking worries and no stress. Just hop on and feel a little like a child again.
Anyone who thinks the farm goes quiet in winter hasn’t met our Luis yet. At half past four in the morning, he starts his first round in the barn: our Brown Swiss ladies need feeding, caring for and pampering, whatever the weather. Then there’s Fritzi, our Haflinger mare, and Indios the pony, the dwarf rabbits Bailey, Smokey, Maulwurf and Batman, and our cats Frieda, Findus and Rufus, who never abandon their self-appointed posts as farm guards – not even in the depths of winter. Moarhof never sleeps. And anyone who wants to is more than welcome to come along and see what everyday life on a real working farm looks like. Even – and especially – in winter.
